You might not even remember my melt down trying to get my interns over the line. I learned so much from them in the end that frankly scared me at how afraid they are about getting it right, impressing, not asking for help because they believe it is conditional and they have to do it themselves. I gave them as much kindness as I could and every one of them broke down in tears.
And, exactly as you put it there, I was fighting against their setup. The company brings them here on Erasmus funding. Most don't get jobs and it is seen as a holiday. A small percentage do want the opportunity but they are living away for the first time where the majority are bumming it out, telling them what's the point in what they are doing, etc. It was an uphill battle and I have stepped away from it now. I will reach them other ways thanks to what I have learned by sitting with them.
I much prefer working with younger people because I learn so much from them too and they still have hope and desire to follow their dreams.

Yep… it is Time to "Decorate the Cage" The IRON CAGE….of unhappiness, guilt, scarcity!!
EXAMPLE- At dinner in a conversation-(14 people at a Chinese Restaurant)- Dan (age 34) was "flipping out with tremble"- with GOOD CAUSE!!!
(Dan has 3 kids under the age of Five years makes $250,000 with full-Union Benefits….family of five Health, Dental, Eyes, full 6 months paid Maternity leave for him, 6 Weeks Vacation Time, Sick Leave…Dan's wife is a "stay at home Mom!" Everything is on him- to get up and go to work- and come home energized to be with and play with his little ones!!!
~~~Time to DECORATE THE CAGE….was my advice…(which he heard every word I said)…resulting in Dan…..
1) installed the "most incredible SOUND SYSTEM in his "WORK TRUCK!!! The "sound" in his Work Truck rivals his Living Room set-up!!
2) The work truck Roof-rack (for ladders) now has extra hooks for the surf-boards!
3) The YETI job-coolers have been divided and the "Full- Italian Deli" features an "on
thejob Daily- Special!" … plus there is a dedicated USB port used for brewing the crew's Morning Coffee!~~~~DECORATE THE CAGE and makes life simpler and introduces a lot more fun to everyone!
