Descriptions:

E-cigarettes and vapes have exploded in popularity in the last decade, especially among youth and young adults — from 2011 to 2015, e-cigarette use among high school students in the US increased by 900 percent. Biobehavioral scientist Suchitra Krishnan-Sarin explains what you’re actually inhaling when you vape (hint: it’s definitely not water vapor) and explores the disturbing marketing tactics being used to target kids. “Our health, the health of our children and our future generations is far too valuable to let it go up in smoke — or even in aerosol,” she says.

  1. Do smokers really need 15,000 kid friendly flavors? Does a restaurant really need more than one food choice on their menu? That is the dumbest vape related argument. Apparently once you turn 18, you lose your sense of taste, and can now only enjoy cardboard flavor. And coming from a misinformed woman who probably has conversations with her friends at dinner parties about wine flavors.

  2. Two-thirds of this TED talk is about how we don't know enough about harmful effects of vaping and the other third is about harmful effects of nicotine (even though that conversation is independent to vaping itself).
Then it summarises with asking for regulations… This talk was a conveyance of bias more than anything else.

  3. This woman is a Professor of Psychiatry. I'm not sure why she is being presented as an authority on vaping. I don't smoke or vape nicotine, but it is outrageous to prevent adults from doing so.

  4. Vaping is a far safer alternative to cigarettes, that has been proven in medical studies around the world; having said that this is not a product young people should be allowed to purchase or have access to, just as with cigarettes. I am an ex smoker who moved to vaping after 15 years and sure i am seeing health benefits, but i am under no such illusion that it is completely without risks, just considerably less risk.

  5. Everyone can see how obviously biased this conversation is but whenever you merely suggest at the hint that there's other areas of health and medicine that carry the same kind of bias you’re shut down.

  6. Vaping is meant for helping too quit smoking, i dont understand why people vape for fun when its still bad for. People with a severe cigarette addiction should be using vapes instead of highschoolers that just want too look cool

  7. Lungs were made for air, that's pretty obvious, but for a heavy smoker, switching to vaping is a life changing experience. After over 20 years of smoking and 5 failed attempts to quit, I found that vaping certified, good quality liquid on good quality vapers have improved my health on a way I couldn't have imagined. In just ONE WEEK I noticed an increased ability to smell odors and feel flavors, my chest noises are gone. Lower blood pressure and heart rate. A month ago, if I inhaled air to full capacity, I ended out coughing, no exceptions; now I can do that without any problems. No more cigarette smell, no more ashes, no more carbon monoxide, tar, any of those subproducts that comes from combustion.
Please take my suggestion into account; you MUST make a difference between teens starting to vape or smoke and heavy smokers trying to quit. Also, in the US the regulations, if any, are totally insufficient. If you consume european licensed liquids you won't have any of those problems, as in Europe they have regulated this very strictly. Teens shouldn't start vaping, and of course stay away from nicotine in any form, but the benefits for smokers changing to vaping and from then to quitting totally is a game changer for public health.

  8. YOU ALWAYS GET THE ABSOLUTE TRUTH FROM TEDMED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THAT LADY TOLD THE TRUTH ABOUT E-CIGARETTES – THEY ARE EVIL, AND THEY ARE DANGEROUS – IT IS A KNOWN FACT (IF YOU DO YOUR RESEARCH) THAT E-CIGARETTES HAVE KILLED OVER EIGHT BILLION PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD – WHO KNOWS WHERE THIS VAPE CRAZE MAY LEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WHEN WE WERE ALL YOUNG WE NEVER HID ANYTHING FROM OUR PARENTS, CERTAINLY NOT CIGARETTES, CHEWING TOBACCO, SNUFF, ETC. – BUT TODAY'S CHILDREN REALLY DO HID THINGS FROM THEIR PARENTS, MY, HOW AWFUL – SIT DOWN WITH YOUR CHILDREN AND WARN THEM ABOUT THE HORRIFIC SIDE EFFECTS OF THESE NASTY VAPE MACHINES – FOR PETE'S SAKE, TALK WITH THEM THIS VERY NIGHT – IT IS POSSIBLE THAT VAPE IS ACTUALLY POSION ENOUGH TO CHANGE THE DNA OF YOUR CHILDREN, IMAGINE YOUR GRANDCHILDREN BEING BORN WITH TWO HEADS, TWENTY SIX FINGERS, THREE EYE BALLS, ETC. – OH MY, LET US ALL STOP THE EVIL VAPE BEFORE IT KILLS US ALL (PLEASE SEE MY FIRST MULTI-SENTENCE PARAGRAPH IN THIS POST FOR THE TRUE STATISTICS ON THE FATALITY OF VAPING) – THANK YOU!!!!!!!

  9. I see a lot of people in the comments talking about how vaping weaned them off of cigarette smoking which is awesome. My question is, how harmful is vaping for people who have never smoked a cigarette?

  10. Someone should have told her that over eating is bad for your health. Should our government be able to control what we eat? They want us to inject ourselves with a vax that has not been properly tested and already have bad side effects, yet we are hearing about how bad vaping is that has already proven to be far better than cigarettes. I am one who started vaping recently and I can tell you, "I can't stand the smell or taste of cigarettes. I also breathe better and my caugh is gone. I have smoked for years and already feel healthier now that I vape." Is this woman a scientist, or a mother?

  11. Before reading: to my curious Teenagers and young adults that don't smoke/vape? Don't start. Gonna do it anyways? Pick up a vape, don't smoke.

TL;DR: YOU DON'T DIE FROM NICOTINE, YOU DIE FROM SMOKE. Vaping has been mislabeled and wrongfully criticized during its rise in popularity 2018-2019 In America. What Journalists and News outlets failed to distinguish is the clear seperation of the product young teens and adults were getting sick by and the Regulated Products, with or without Nicotine, that the majority of the Vaping Community uses. Thc Vapes(UNREGULATED) were Cut with Vitamin E Acetate, causing Pneumonia like symptoms when used moderately. I quit smoking. 8 months no smoking since my switch to vape, no thoughts on going back. Respiratory, Sleep, Stamina, and Mental Health Conditions IMPROVED BY LARGE MARGINS after switching to vape. I'd rather my kid vape than smoke cigs, 100 percent. both are available out there. The mentality of Giving Vapes the same Rep as smoking Cigs pisses me off and will just discourage many citizens from vaping and instead make them go for Cigarettes since that is what everyone else is doing. Using Myself as an Example, Vaping is cheaper. couple hundred Bucks a year compared to 4 to 5 thousand a year. Scared for your child? My advice to you would be to talk to your kid and find out what they are vaping. With store bought vape juices and vape devices, the only thing you would have to worry about honestly is the Addiction to Nicotine, which is comparable to your addiction to caffeine. There is even non Nicotine options for your child to use. could be that they just want to puff clouds and aren't looking for a Nicotine fix as stated by the lady in the video.

"Vaping is a risk, like all things you do. However, where vaping is as if you are taking a step out your front door and onto the side walk, smoking is like jumping from the 16th floor.."

Im sorry this is BS(by this, i mean the video. Not the quote above). I can understand her perspective though, given the year this video came out. Says 3y ago so im guessing, late 2018-2019. Even I thought vaping was really bad. Before I say why that changed though, of course, if you don't smoke or vape, don't start. That's the world we would all prefer for the youth, myself included. Hear me out though.

Started smoking cigarettes at 17. Buddy of mine was walking with me from my school to the train station when he saw a half smoked cig on the pavement, picked it up, put fire to the butt to kill germs(doubt he'd put it there long enough to kill anything) lit and smoked it. I was against cigarettes religiously, used to make fun of someone who was older and asked for my lighter (i was a very mild pot head) to light their cigarette while walking outside. However, senior year was a tragic year for me due to family matters, so i was looking for anything to make me feel good. Buddy asked if i wanted to try it and i said sure. The buzz lasted what I can remember to be 5 – 6 seconds, but has kept me addicted to cigarettes smoking for 8 years. I don't even remember the last time i ever felt that buzz. What I did feel until 8 months ago though was sleeping problems, becoming fatigued faster than normal, and breathing problems(Scariest out of the 3 things I listed). Without doing anything at all i would need to catch my breath. I felt like i wasn't getting enough oxygen at times, and that would be me just sitting around watching tv! Truly, i had felt the consequences of smoking for 8 years, and to experience that at 25 opened my eyes. Now i just wish I would've done my research on vaping sooner. Not buy into the BS news outlets were putting out and stuck with it when i tried it in 2018! Would've felt this good sooner, mentally and physically!
My point is, no matter what we really do, teens are going to try out what they want regardless of what anyone does, that's just in a teens nature, its a very Curious Arc in our lifetime.

Started using a Vape device at 24 years old (last year). as of December 31st 2021, I've been completely cigarette free (8 months) without cravings, likely due to my nic cravings being satisfied by the Vape. Breathing feels great, I have yet to find myself gasping for Air or having shortness of breath, as if when I inhale, I'm not getting enough oxygen to the lungs. Very Scary feeling and was happening too frequently for comfort.

I believe I have Obstructive sleep apnea based upon what others tell me when I sleep, and apparently this improved too! While I can't say if this is so, I do know that when I was trying to go to sleep before I had trouble finding a comfy position where I can breathe normally without pauses in my breathing while trying to sleep. This was extremely frustrating, uncomfortable, and had me thinking if I was going to die while trying to sleep from lack of oxygen. Ofc I wasn't going to, but everynight felt like I was being tortured, as if oxygen was being cut just before I would doze off to sleep. I had to take otc meds and distract myself with videos to go to sleep. Many times I would drink alcohol until I got sick and black out to try and counter these problems of sleep. It was bad. Now I sleep like a baby and feel my lungs working the way they are supposed to, allowing me to take deep, rich breaths in and out without problems!. I also don't reek of smoke or get congested easily. The constant coughing has stopped as well and even though I'm chunkier than what I used to be, my skin and hair are starting to radiate with life again!

The Consequences of being smoke free positively affected my Mental health. Even though my conditions are here to stay, all the quality of life improvements made by quitting make the days feel easier. I find that my head space is less foggy, allowing me to be more efficient at focusing my attention, processing information that i recieve and retaining a good portion of the information given to me. My Brain is better at shielding against Negative Thoughts, when i start thinking about something negative, i tend to find creative ways to lessen the impact of the thought or find something to do to distract me long enough for the thought to fade. My energy seems to be on the brighter side(though i have to see if this is not just me heading towards a manic episode).Lastly, I feel more attractive. My Creativity, Positivity, and Joy from not smoking for 8 months has helped me see myself in a better light. I'm taking the lemons and making lemonade in places I would have never thought if I didn't open my mind to new possibilities and instead kept the doors shut and turned of the lights! All of this buy just switching to a different method of Nicotine intake!

My Nicotine dependency is still very much present, I have saved myself from what would've been a very high possibility of an excruciatingly painful life, bed-ridden, suffering a slow and painful death that would occur after decades of struggling just to breath everyday. I think needing a fix for a chemical (which I could eventually just quit with enough willpower) is a fare trade if ya ask me! It is no different than your daily fix of caffeine!

Vaping was Getting bad press During 2018 to 2019 because of young adults who were pretty much getting sick and were hospitalized. They said that it was due to vaping. the problem is that they didn't report the fact that these people were also using THC Vape pens. These vape pens were not regulated and since they weren't regulated they were usually cut with something called vitamin E acetate. While absorption of Vitamin E is fine as a topical product or even as a digestible, it has been proven to be harmful when inhaled in a vapor form, possibly coating your respiratory tract with it. However, no one is certain on what exactly happens when it runs through the system. Since this was happening, It was concluded that vaping has become a very high risk and dangerous form to intake tobacco in America, mixing those who use regulated vape kits and juices with the unregulated stuff which was causing hospitalizations, with patients having symptoms that closely resemble Pneumonia. Even I thought that vaping was a bad choice and that it wasn't very much different from cigarette smoking. I was staying away from vaping, just kind of undermined it as if it wasn't really something that could be a viable choice for me to change from smoking to something else to get my nicotine fix. Now, I am sure it has just gotten bad press and is a VERY Good and wise alternative to smoking.
Do Celebrate Vaping, as it might lead young adults to a healthier life, healthier lifestyle, and a comfortable future.

And yes Lady, we do need 1500 GOD DAMN CHOICES OF FLAVORS! ?

  12. Her talk is very negative on vaping. I'd bet that she works for the tobacco lobby.
E cigarette is at least 95% safer than tobacco, its cheaper and it tastes better.
Don't let the BS about vaping put out by tobacco companies stop you from switching, it may save your life.

  13. If so . Why the government give right for mintfactory. To operate . Or tabasco company. They still operating . Tax . When you don't mind this if no good .where is the real deal in here .

  14. I am far more worried about the stuff they are putting into our foods. Smoking/vaping you can give up with willpower. Food you can’t give up…unless you want to cease to be alive. Don’t knock what you don’t know. In time we will know if vaping is not as safe as we are lead to believe. But on a hunch I would say it is certainly more safer than the only options we had before…cigars, ciggies, pipes, old drum!

  15. I am a bit confused, so it's legal to buy cigarettes and tobacco products, legal to buy alcohol and flavoured alcohol. It's also cool and legal in many states and countries to vape THC and CBD liquids….. yet….

We are declaring a war on vaping?
Just make laws banning sales of e-cigs to minors!

  16. I think lots of people are missing the point, young people shouldn't be using e-cigs at all to begin with even if they're better than using actual cigarettes
