When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like, “If you live each day as if it were your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.”

It made an impression on me… and since then, for the past 33 years I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself, “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I’m about to do today.”

And whenever the answer has been, “no” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything: all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure… these things just fall away in the face of death… leaving only what is truly important.

Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked; there is no reason not to follow your heart.

No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to Heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet, death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because death is very likely the single best invention of life. It’s life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new.

Right now, the new is you, but someday not too long from now you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it’s quite true. Your time is limited; so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.

  1. IT'S UP TO YOU MAKING YOUR LIFE A SUCCESSFUL STORY. Less parties, less sleep, more work, more self control, and trust me, you won't have to say your name anymore. They will know who you are. Easy to say, difficult to do?
    I went from nothing, to national champion in distance running at less than a year. If i can create my own legacy, you can also create yours.
    REMEMBER.
    Steve Jobs had also 24 hours a day 😉

  2. Honestly if today will be my last day, I'm not spending it in the gym or reading books. I'm going to drink, eat a lot of food. Spend all my savings. Have sex with the next person I see.

  3. This video truly is life-changing, so many of us spend our day to day lives just going through the motions instead of living in the moment and appreciating everything around us. Although the idea of living life like every day may be your last is a scary concept it helps us to not take anything for granted.

  4. Remember one thing – happiness is the key to life. It's not money, it's not success, it's not achievements. It's all about feeling good at the end of the day. Don't be like me – sacrificing your happiness for your success. Finding the right balance is the key to a happy life!

  5. I always find this "If this was your last day, what would you do ?" as extremely flawed.

    If it was my last day to live, I would want to spend it with friends and family, saying goodbyes and reminiscing about the great achievements and successes.

    But if you answer that question, I would not want to do that every day, as I would not move forward. So I think we need some perspective.

  6. Paradox : He dedicated his life for innovation & technology, and did wonderful for sure, but it's known now that the more technology there is the more depression it's likely to generate. There have been studies that showed a link between smartphone use & depression !!!

  7. Idk why but i like programming and like a job thats what i think i like the most ,but in my heart idk i fell like video games are what make me happy and what i truly want to become is a professional gamer.(You guys what think?)
