  1. This is truly powerful! But this also marked another revolutionary moment in time where women are seen AND heard, rather than being forced by others to stay complicit. Sexual assault/harassment is a serious issue.

  2. I love Olivia but I'm not really seeing why there's so much praise for her demanding that she not work with a guy who was convicted of a crime in the past. It's wrong, yes, she has a right to not want to work with a registered offender, that's true – but at the same time, why do we as a society abandon people for crimes like that instead of trying to rehabilitate them? It only makes them worse people when you take away their ability to learn from their mistake and grow. A LOT of men who molested someone didn't do it because they were evil or meant to hurt anyone – they did it because they themselves were often abused, were COMPLETELY fucked up mentally growing up and never got the help they needed – they craved intimacy, expressed that in ENTIRELY the wrong way – but when you punish them for every second for the rest of their life and NEVER let them grow and thrive and do BETTER and reach a better place in life, you aren't helping to make sure they ARE better people who would never repeat it again. And people can and DO change. I'm not saying they should just ignore that they did – hold them accountable, make them get therapy and all of that – but society just holding these guys down for the rest of their lives and humiliating and beating them down over and over again every second of every day, reminding the world of what they did every second of every day, it doesn't rehabilitate them – it doesn't help them to recognize what they did was wrong and work to be better people – it JUST ruins their life, and doesn't encourage change. I'm of the view that – barring repeat offenders – guys who very purposefully raped multiple women, serial killers and so on – MOST crimes – including sex crimes – shouldn't be things that you handle by labeling them a monster for life and shitting on them forever – they should be HANDLED by making sure this person gets the therapy and whatever else is needed that they CLEARLY needed before so that they CAN learn and grow from it and even work to make sure others LIKE them get that help and prevent these things from happening.

Abuse creates abusers. That's how the cycle works. Sometimes, it's even genetic – some men are literally born into families where mental illness runs in the family and have abnormal tendencies from BIRTH. A lot of them HATE themselves – they HATE that they have the thoughts they have, have the impulses they have – it SCARES them and they can't talk to anyone about it or seek help because of the stigma it carries. Mental illness is behind a lot of sexual abuse – people aren't fundamentally evil creatures – they're FORMED into someone who does these things by experiences and by the lack of help for the mental illnesses they often have for years. That's WHY there are so many sexual assault cases and molestation cases – they are more often than not cases where the man acted on an impulse without thinking, regreted it later and hated himself for it and then found himself acting on impulse again – without thought about it until later. That's a mental illness and it needs to be ADDRESSED. I'd say most molestation cases happen because you have a mentally ill young man who is very lonely, feels certain impulses and has a hard time controlling them. Doesn't mean just look the other way, but I think society needs to try to UNDERSTAND the why of it and not just knee-jerk react with life-long humiliation and shaming and taking away any prospect of a normal, functional human relationship for this guy for life. It's REALLY easy to just dismiss these guys as evil monsters but it takes an intelligent and empahetic person to understand that it's more complex than that – that these are guys that need help like any OTHER mental illness requires. STIGMATIZING sexual perversions and these often impulsive crimes doesn't address the core cause behind it, which is mental illness and not "he's just evil".

Anyway, my point is, if a guy made a mistake 20 years ago, 30 years ago, 40 years ago and it NEVER leaves him alone – if he can NEVER escape that stigma – if he has NO chance of ever having a normal family and relationship or career, he's INFINITELY more likely to REMAIN that kind of guy than he is to learn and change. Are you the same person you were 20 years ago? I know I'm not. Not even close. God knows I wouldn't make 90% of the mistakes I made years ago now. I'd have gone to college earlier, I wouldn't have been hung up on fears of finances, I would have moved to a better place sooner, wouldn't have had some of the relationships I had, wouldn't have wasted years of my life fucking around doing nothing, if I could travel back t hen with my current mind. So what makes you think someone who diddled their cousin when they were 20 something is going to be the same person 20 or 30 years later? They've had a whole LIFETIME of experience since – they've probably if they're human at all realized how messed up what they did was and they probably have felt horrible about it for years and would take it back if they could. But then the accusation comes, 20 years later, and EVERYTHING they've worked to build toward and better themselves with for decades is taken away, they're branded a monster for life, jailed, and they're essentially dead even if their heart is still beating. You've already killed them at the point where you don't even let them have a career without further humiliation decades after the fact.

I'm NOT justifying the actions of guys like Weinstein. THAT guy is a different case. This wasn't a one-off thing where he made a mistake, had a lapse of judgment 20, 30 years ago and worked hard to be a better man. THIS guy, Weinstein, was ACTIVELY assaulting women, threatening women, even RAPING women for DECADES and doing it in a very premeditated way. He's probably beyond help at this point but IMAGINE all the women who could have been spared that if he'd had someone take him aside, address it with him and make sure he got the help he needed PRIVATELY decades ago, sparing him the stigma, helping him to be a better man if at all possible and sparing, again, women decades of horrific assaults and rape. That's what I mean. If you ALLOW for these things to be addressed as the mental illnesses they are and stop demonizing someone who made a mistake once, you build a world where people who need medication or therapy GET that without being labeled monsters, privately and without being branded demons – and you SPARE the would-be victims of his that he'd have assaulted if he were too afraid to get the help he needed. We've created a world where guys with sex-based mental illnesses CANNOT come forward and seek help BECAUSE it will label them as a monster and end their life. That's no good. The first and best course of action is to make sure he DOES face consequences PRIVATELY so that he has a CHANCE of getting the help he needs, ridding himself of that illness and maybe even working in community service to help others like him find the right path. But instead you throw them in jail for 20 years, label them sex offenders in front of the world and effectively render them dead men walking. Of COURSE they're going to re-offend when you do that. Some offenders have assaulted HUNDREDS of women. HUNDREDS. If he'd gotten the help he needed right away instead of the branding, it might only be just the one.
