Description: Today, Jayne Leach talks about how network marketers can overcome one of their biggest fears – the word “no.”

Research shows that we hear the word “no” many more times than we have ever heard the word “yes.” And so, you would think that we would be used to hearing the word “no.” But in reality, when we start out on our Network Marketing journey, our biggest fear and biggest obstacle to overcome is learning how to handle the word “no.” You might have all the energy and passion in the world, but if you hear the word “no” too often, that passion can begin to fizzle out, and questions and doubts start to take its place.

One of things that I had to understand was how to turn a “no” into a “yes” because it was the “yeses” that was going to allow the business to grow. So, I took a step back, and I realized that it was all about the conversation. Initially, I was making it all about me, my business, my opportunity, and my journey. But it should be nothing about me, and everything about them.

I had to start building relationships with people and find out what was important to them. I had to be more caring and more aware. And I especially had to understand that it might not happen the first time. Sometimes it’s not the first conversation that bares the results, but many conversations down the line.

It was a game-changer for me when I started having conversations with people, asking how they were or what their plans were for the holiday. When I began to get into them, I realized that people opened up a lot more. Then at the end of the conversation, I would mention why I called, what I was passionate about, and why I would like to have a get together with them.

And here was the key thing… before, when they said “no” at this point, I would put the phone down and that was the end of the story. But now that I was focused on them and not me, I was ready to embrace the “nos.” And so, when somebody gave me a “no,” I would say, “Thanks for your honesty. I really appreciate it. However, I’m really passionate about what I’m doing, and while the time isn’t right for you, can we keep in touch? Can I give you a call in a few weeks to tell you more about what I’m doing and find out how you are?”

And they would say, “Yes.” In that one conversation, just by embracing the “no” and saying that’s okay, I was able to turn a “no” into a “yes.” And suddenly, my diary was filling up with “yes” after “yes.” I would call them back as arranged, and I would find out how they’d been, what was new with them. And if they still said it wasn’t the right time, I would say, “That’s no problem. Why don’t I give you another call in maybe three or four weeks?” So, every single “no” was turned into a “yes” one way or another.

  1. Yes, we are so get used to interested in what we want. We need to learn to be interested in them, not 'ME'. So the only way on earth to get other people to say 'ÝES' is to talk about what they want and show them how to get it. That's a great game-changer…

  2. LISTEN…. too much bulshit products are being sold to wrong market so people by automatisation is converting reply into No. Imagine if you are selling food to hungry man….would he say Yes or NO! Target better, lose the attitude of I must sell it , because you seem desperate, and focus on making better product than competition ….that's the core of Value market. You Are paid by the value that you bring.

  3. Research I have seen say they have heard the word "no" 200 times a day. 400 times seems a bit excessive.
I have alway had a hard time "playing the game" with friends. I put in the back of my head "they then think that the only time I want to talk with them is the time I am trying to sell them something". For me, I now focus on sharing.. "Hi (friend), I would love to share with you what I am doing….."

  4. I totally understand the no to a yes by respect and making it about them, however, my struggle is when they say yes you can call me back, they don't pick up the phone because they know its me.

  5. I just started with network marketing and this video really makes realise my mistake I've been doing this whole time. Thanks for such a wonderful content. 🙂

  6. Hey, I got a couple questions about that beginning bit:

    1. Who conducted the research seeing how many times the average person hears "no"?

    2. How was the research conducted?

    3. Why do you automatically think that's a bad thing, since "no" isn't always an answer to a request?

    4. How do you know they hear "no" more than "yes"? Where's the research for that?

  7. I would probably simplify this even more, by keeping in touch and not even mentioning the opportunity. But I would listen, listen, listen – for little clues. Look for other people and set the example. The 'no' people are still watching.

  8. Are you seriously telling me that no matter how many times they say no you’re going to just keep badgering them? On the 6th time of them saying no you would say that you’re never going to stop calling them? I’m really surprised that works for you, it wouldn’t work on me. A great way to lose friends and make people want to block your number. No wonder MLM has such a bad reputation.

  9. These MLM parasites never take no for an answer as they look for more victims to sign up for their 'business opportunities' Pond life who look at people as a cash advance, something to make money from, a commodity to exploit, they smile, all the way to the bank, with your money which keeps them wealthy while you live on mindless hope and non existent success. The MLM industry is poison, cheats, con artists and habitual liars are its main feature, drug dealers, pimps and thieves have the same credentials. Could you trust any of them? absolutely not! It boasts a 97-99% failure rate, 100% in some cases, not a glowing resume' for financial success! Then we have the 'Marketing pros' who mentor from the side lines, the one above is of course included, they instil a pathetic sense of future success and the premise of an iconic life style IF you follow their teaching when you subscribe…..it will not happen…EVER….. MLM 'business 'opportunities' are disguised pyramid selling with the word SCAM attached, no matter what company, it has never been a 'profession' that is a contradiction in terms, its a make believe industry and the only people who make money from it are at the very top, the rest are cannon fodder who contribute to their wealth! It seems Uncle Eric has been investigated for "unethical business practices in his colourful past life, that sounds like FRAUD in layman terms, he has also been mentioned many times in various media reports, unsatisfied clients, business deals gone wrong etc. nothing ever proven BUT where there is smoke…..something to remember. These people walk a fine line between legality and otherwise, mostly the latter and should be serving jail time for corporate fraud, deception and the criminal enticement of the slow witted and the desperate! This is all poison, keep far away!
