Brené Brown on Empathy

In this video

What is the best way to ease someone’s pain and suffering? In this beautifully animated RSA Short, Dr Brené Brown reminds us that we can only create a genuine empathic connection if we are brave enough to really get in touch with our own fragilities.

  1. Brené Brown it’s not just sympathy that drives empathy away , it’s also weaknesses or uncomfortable emotions which people have brushed under the carpet and I guess that’s why it’s difficult for people to show up and empathise with another because a difficult situation reminds them of their past . It’s really sad when that happens ,when friends can’t show up for another friends loss because it reminds them of their past . It makes the person grieving bitter and the circle continues…

  2. Unbelievable wrong definitions.
Here "sympathy" interpreted as "neutral" emotions. It's absolutely wrong and non-professional.
You can find sympathy and empathy definitions from reliable scientific sources:
    1. APA – https://psycnet.apa.org/buy/1986-14536-001
    2. Merriam Webster – https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/sympathy-empathy-difference
    3. Stanford University research – https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/empathy/
    4. Oxford Dictionary – https://www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/definition/english/sympathy?q=sympathy

I realize that the word "empathy" could be used in common life differently than in psychological science but NOT how it's shown in this video…
The definition of sympathy in this video is highly misleading.

  3. Well no in my opinion sympathy is something else… In my opinion it's this.. Sympathy is a tribalistic instinct for example… I am trans and obviously other trans people have my sympathy by default… Simply for being the same thing as me. Empathy however is more down to individual level, individual experiences and emotions.
